The tracks on the upcoming Acholi Music Project are essential listening. They capture vital stories told through mind bending vocal performances. This stunning collection of music came to TEAM Records via Adrian Yen, an anthropology graduate student doing extensive fieldwork in the Acholi communities of northern Uganda. The recordings caught my attention immediately, and continue to surprise and delight upon repeat listenings. In the course of a single song, and at times, a single sentence, the musicians span the widest possible range of emotions. The call and response passages are remarkable, evoking the best qualities of group-sing - it often seems as if a lyric is just too important to be sung by a single voice and therefore must be carried by a chorus of everyone involved.
